Mastering Mulch: How to Determine the Right Amount for Your Landscaping Project

Mulch is a landscaping essential that offers numerous benefits, from weed suppression to moisture retention and enhancing the overall aesthetics of your outdoor space. However, one common question we often hear at GLM Landscape Supply in Alpharetta is, “How much mulch do I need for my project?” In this blog, we’ll guide you through the steps to accurately determine the amount of mulch you should order for your landscaping endeavors.

1. Measure Your Beds

The first step in determining how much mulch you’ll need is to measure the area where you plan to apply it. For rectangular or square beds, multiply the length by the width to find the square footage. If your landscaping includes irregularly shaped beds, divide them into smaller, more manageable sections and measure each separately.

2. Determine the Desired Depth

The depth of mulch you want to apply depends on your landscaping goals and the type of mulch you’re using. A typical range is 2 to 4 inches. Keep in mind that applying too much mulch can suffocate plants and lead to moisture retention issues, so be mindful of your depth choice.

3. Calculate Cubic Feet

To find the volume of mulch needed, you’ll need to calculate cubic feet. To do this, multiply the square footage of your bed by the desired depth in feet. For example, if you have a 100 square foot bed and want to apply mulch at a depth of 0.25 feet (3 inches), the calculation would be:

100 sq. ft. x 0.25 ft. = 25 cubic feet of mulch needed

4. Convert to Cubic Yards

Most mulch is sold by the cubic yard, so you’ll need to convert your cubic feet measurement to cubic yards. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so divide your cubic feet measurement by 27. In our example: 25 cubic feet ÷ 27 = approximately 0.93 cubic yards of mulch

5. Consider Extra for Settling

Mulch can settle over time, especially if it’s freshly applied. To account for settling, it’s a good idea to order slightly more mulch than your calculated amount. Adding an extra 10-20% to your total can help ensure you have enough to maintain the desired depth over time.

6. Consult with Experts
